Below are the 100% crops of my reviewed cameras. I have attempted to show the same crop location.
These cameras have different resolutions and lenses so take that into consideration.
No enhancements or other modifications have been made to the photos.
All shots were hand shot with flash at the same location and lighting.
All settings in auto mode except ISO level.
All cameras are zoomed out with optical stabilization on (if applicable).
Most of the review sites I have seen use professional bright controlled lighting.
While this may give more consistent results, I don't believe
it reflects the results of real world use.
The Sony DSC-S600 is here just to show how a typical P&S is. Although, I think it has better images than the Panasonic TZ5 up until ISO 200 due to it's better focusing. The Canon SX110IS was just behind the Fuji in detail up to ISO 400 - although image noise performance is suffering on the Canon. The Canon SX110IS's worse than poor battery life makes it an unusable camera. At the higher ISO's, it's all the Fuji's and the Canon sx230 hs. The Fuji's have the largest sensor of all these cameras and it shows. The Panasonic DMC-TZ5 fails across the board. The DMC-TZ5 took the longest to get a focus lock (with firmware 1.2) and did the worst job at every ISO level. Only ISO 200 looks reasonable on the TZ5 and image noise suppression at higher ISO's is too high and causes loss of detail. The DMC-TZ5 had very inconsistent exposure unlike all the other cameras. The Sony DSC-S600 did suprisingly better than expected considering it's small 1/2.5" sensor - but then again it is only 6 megapixels. The Fuji's to my eyes are the clear winners. I think the F40fd is a bit better image noise wise at the 1600 ISO level, athough if you scale the F100fd image down to the same level as the F40, the difference is minimal. The F40's 2.8 lens also does a better job with lower light levels. The Fuji's are obviously not up to SLR level, but for a point and shoot they are pretty darn good. What's interesting is that the Canon SX230 HS iso 800+ shots do better than the F100FD in other pictures - but is behind the Fuji these test shots. The canon's focus does not look right. Unfortunately the Canon SX230 HS photos are not the same composition (2 years later) so the comparison may be off. |
