Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray Player Major Features:

  • HDMI connectivity
  • Ethernet connection
  • Scales to 720p or 1080p
  • Netflix compatible
  • Built-In WIFI adapter

My experience:
I picked up this blu ray player at Walmart for $138. I have it connected via HDMI to a 32" 720p LCD TV. I manually set the output resolution to 720p - what's the point of upscaling to 1080p then the TV has to scale back down to 720p. I updated the firmware via DVD before trying anything. Initially I set it up using WIFI without any issues. I later ran an ethernet cable in the attic only because I hate WIFI. Activation of Netflix was no big deal. The image quality of Blu Ray disks is good - Netflix is good even with my limited 3.0mbs DSL. I do have a few minor complaints. It does not remember where you last left a disk playing most of the time. I have yet to find a way to jump to an exact point in time. Combine this issue with the previous one and it's a bit annoying. You can jump to chapters though. It will not allow skipping of the previews - just fast forward. After a fresh turn on if you select Netflix it checks your connection and makes you select Netflix again and then does an acquiring content process which you then have to select OK again. It seems this does not occur if you wait a minute or so after turn on before selecting Netflix. You can not play Netflix items not in the queue even though some of the others services do allow searching for titles. April 2011 - seems they have changed the Netflix UI. Now you can browse new titles and such so it is possible to play movies not in the Queue. I do not see any way to know the current streaming quality or bit rate.

Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray Player Pros:

  • Fast loading of disks
  • Decent image quality
  • Many streaming services
Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray Player Cons:
  • Can't play Netflix items that are not in your queue - no longer true as of April 2011
  • No HDMI cables included
  • It does not remember where you last left a disk playing - almost always.
  • Can't jump to an exact point in time
  • Some clunky user interface issues
  • Error 300 and 600 due to Sony's server middle man problems.
  • Sony support (at least via email) is lousy - apparently they can't read english

Spot Rating:
The Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray Player works pretty well despite some quirks.
Note that this player is being replaced by the BDP-S580 but the 570 is still available.
I have downgraded the rating from 4 spots. Since Sony's players use Sony servers for all streaming and internet activity these players can not be used if Sony's servers are having problems. I have complained to Sony about the error 300 and 600 errors and have suggested that they at least have a failover built into their firmware to bypass their servers if their servers become inaccessible. An example of this was just last night 09/08/2011 - Massive power failure in California - guess what? None of the internet services work on the player. I'm in Florida, I go to my computer and it's fine - only the Sony players don't work. Sony didn't want to hear my suggestions and the responses I got back from my complaints indicate they can't read either. It is ridiculous that all the other brand players don't rely on a third party server to access the internet content. I would drop it more spots, but the player does play DVD's very well.
